#182: What Bob Sang To Us - L'Amphitheatre, Joliette, Quebec, July 31, 1989
Playlist for Sunday November 4, 2012.
Hosted by Greg Denton with guest Jon Johnson
LISTEN (part 1)
LISTEN (part 2)
1. Wake Up Jacob - Prince Albert Hunt & His Texas Ramblers
I went to my first ever Bob Dylan concert with my dear friends Lorraine & Roger Field. They showed up in my painting studio at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design one afternoon in late July 1989 and announced that we were going on a road trip. We left Nova Scotia on Sunday July 30th headed for Joliette, Quebec (just north of Montreal) where Bob Dylan was doing a show at an outdoor theatre there on Monday evening, July 31, 1989. It was concert #115 of what Dylan had deemed The Never-Ending Tour (still ongoing). The weather was perfect, sunny, and mild. Steve Earle opened and Bob's pared down band consisted of G.E. Smith (of Saturday Night Live fame) on guitar, Tony Garnier on bass (who is still on the road with Bob today), and Christopher Parker on drums.
Roger Field, at the age of 67, was taken from us by cancer in the early morning hours of Sunday October 28, 2012. His 3 great heroes of art, literature, and music were all Roberts: Robert Frank, Robert Creeley, and Robert Zimmerman (aka Bob Dylan). This episode of This Un-Godly Hour is for Roger.
These tracks are not the actual concert recording, but these are the songs that Bob Dylan sang to us that magical summer evening.
2. Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine) - Bob Dylan
3. Don't Pity Me - Dion & The Belmonts
One of two cover songs Bob Dylan played that night. Don't Pity Me, composed by Lou Stallman & Sidney Jacobson, was never performed by Bob either before or since. That night was the one & only. It was originally recorded by Dion Dimucci with his band Dion & The Belmonts in 1958 and made it to #40 on the U.S. Hot 100. Dion was on tour with Buddy Holly and declined a seat on the airplane that crashed and killed Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper on Feb 2, 1959. Bobbie Vee, who was then unknown, and who Dylan one time claimed both to be, and to have played with, filled in for Holly at the very next concert. Wikipedia mentions another connection to Bob Dylan in 1967: " Although by this stage Dion’s career appeared to be nearing an end, he retained enough credibility to be, along with Bob Dylan, featured on the album cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Why Dylan chose to sing this song on this one night, and never again, will be a mystery forever.
4. Ballad Of Hollis Brown (demo) - Bob Dylan
5. Shelter From The Storm - Bob Dylan
6. I Want You - Bob Dylan
7. Ballad Of A Thin Man - Bob Dylan
8. Don't Think Twice It's Alright (live at the Gaslight 1962) - Bob Dylan
9. One Too Many Mornings - Bob Dylan
10. Mr. Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan
11. Seeing The Real You At Last - Bob Dylan
12. One Irish Rover - Van Morrison
The other cover song of the concert. The European leg of Dylan's 1989 tour wrapped up in June with a couple of shows in Athens with Van Morrison. While there the BBC was filming a documentary on Van Morrison, titled "One Irish Rover". The song itself was written and recorded by Van Morrison for his 1986 album No Guru, No Method, No Teacher. Dylan & Van Morrison sang a duet of One Irish Rover as part of a little 4 song jam on an Athens hilltop that was staged for the BBC film (Do a YouTube search)! Dylan started occasionally adding it to his sets immediately afterward on July 1, 1989, when the North American leg of the tour began. He played it six times that month and continued to play it sporadically through to the end of that tour in Oct 1989. He later played it three times in 1991, once in 1993, and hasn't played it again since.
13. Silvio - Bob Dylan
14. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
15. It Ain't Me Babe - Bob Dylan
16. All Along The Watchtower - Bob Dylan
Hosted by Greg Denton with guest Jon Johnson
