Coney Island was named initially for it's varied & dense population of rabbits. Coney Island (or Conyne Eylandt, as the Dutch who originally colonized the area called it ) translates as Rabbit Island.  Coney (derived from the Latin cuniculus) was once as popular a word for rabbit as bunny is today (bunny is actually an adaptation of coney).  Resort development on Coney Island eventually eliminated the rabbit habitat however which, along with hunting, eliminated the rabbits.
